I need an outdoor security camera to watch my back yard?

I'm looking for something that's less than $150, that will monitor my back yard, ideally something wireless. I would like something that can stream to a computer, so wireless b/g is needed. Also, I would prefer something that was able to take decent images at dusk, because one of the concerns I have are deer eating at my garden. I don't want to have to buy a 24hr VCR, or any other equipment, but streaming to a hard drive is no issue. If possible I'd like something that was motion activated, so that I don't have to sit through 12 hours of video every time a deer eats something. Also, any software recommendations for this would be appreciated. How much will I need to spend? Those seem like a little bit of overkill. I don't need super high quality footage. Just good enough to see where the deer are coming from, and which way the person who keeps stealing my humane squirrel traps comes from.

Anything at/below the $150 price point (and even higher) is going to have near-nonexistent low-light performance. Lumenera makes good quality network security cameras, but they are not cheap. Most of their models are for wired ethernet though.

Many factors here, water being a big one. You'd need a wireless connection, and some proper ouside electrics, and a solution to keep it watertight. Why not just use a trail camera instead of running cable to a cctv and wasting a lot of time viewing video during which nothing happens? Trail cameras are waterproof, battery powered, and motion activated. The pictures are stored on an SD card and can be transferred to a computer. The larger the SD card, the more pictures it can hold (several thousand). I'm pretty sure they're also less expensive than cctv.

She has always liked the birds in the garden and we get reports when they do have some nesting but i thought it might be nice for her to see the birds nesting properly. Hi Mick U can actually do the way like u want it to be. U can connect the cameras to your DVR at your garage and connection to your PC for viewing the video is done by some communication. The best way is by the Ethernet communication al u want is to have a home network, in simple words u can connect your DVR and your PC by the CAT5 cable connecting to the respective Ethernet ports. U can even use a wireless connection if u have a wireless network. U have to set an IP Address to the DVR then u can view the video of the DVR by just typing the IP Address in the web browser at your PC and enabling your activex component in the web browser. This can be done only if your DVR supports Ethernet communication and web based viewing. The other is just lay a coaxial cable from your DVR at garage to your monitor indoor. But u cannot have control in this scenario, you can just view the video. Well, the best way would be to purchase cheap IP camera (no wireless as anyway you need to provide power supply). What I suggest is to purchase this camera can provide power and network connectivity trough a single LAN cable as it has PoE (Power over Ethernet) option. So, it would be like this: 1. Connect power adapter to a electrical socket in your house. 2. Connect LAN cable to PoE and then to your network switch, or router, or directly your PC. 3. Another LAN cable (up to 100 meters or 30 feet) connect to your IP camera (placed on a tree). Note that there will be a LAN cable from your house to that tree. I've already tried motion detection lights for the deer, as well as motion detecting sprinklers, but somehow they keep sneaking in and eating my plants. The traps have been chained down to the ground, but have been taken regardless. So I want to know who is doing this, rather than just trying to make it harder for them.

Put up a motion light sensor which will freak them out. Linksys makes a bunch of wireless cameras that will meet your needs. As far as outdoor use I am not too sure. Maybe put it in a window? Try chaining the traps down or putting them down with a stake and then putting a fence around your garden. That would probably work too.
