Outdoor Wireless IP Camera?

Hi, i need some help with IP cameras, I need a wireless outdoors IP camera that will work with OS X 10.5. A lot of the camera i've looked at say i need windows to use them, but if you view the video via a a web broswer why do i need windows? Any thoughts on which camera to buy would be very helpful. Your best bet is to either buy a PC with Windows on it or install Windows (XP for best results because some things are still not comptiable with vista) onto your mac either using Bootcamp (I think that's what it's called) or just on another partition. Most camera's and stuff like that is made to work with Windows for some reason. Of you don't want to install Windows you can always google a Windows emulator and install it onto your mac then run .exe programs. Just a side note, if you're planning to spy on someone with cameras and they catch you, they can get you into some big, BIG trouble. if you're planning on this I suggest you don't even do it. It should have come with a manual... To access from outside, you need to know your public IP address (www.whatismyip.com), If it changes often, you may have problems unless you have some dynamic naming service (DynDNS or DTDns) and some PC running at home all the time to keep the URL name sync'd to your public IP. Once you know how to access your home from the "Internet world" (by name), you then have to port forward any ports required to view the camera through the routers you have. Often the camera will use port 80, or some other port if they have viewing software. If using port 80, you have to port forward that to the camera, which MUST be at a static LAN IP, like 192.168.1.2 (if your router is at 192.168.1.1). If any camera uses a different port, or extra ports, you have to port forward those as well. If you have two routers, the first must forward the ports to the second router WAN port (must be a static LAN IP of first router), and the second must forward the same ports to the camera. Some ISPs may block incoming port 80, to prevent home web servers. In that case you will have to change the camera's default port, following it's manual to do so...

general questions about surveillance cameras?

I need the following an infrared, outdoor(weatherproof) night-vision,2-5 mega-pixel, 20-40 time zoom camera. However, There are wireless cameras, ip net-cams and cctv. Which one gives the best definition for seeing license plates and faces at night, records the most amount and at FANTASTIC quality right away? I am willing to spend around 400-600 dollars per camera. recording quality H.246, VP8, Webm, What am I looking for? I want quality and no cost to programs to download to get the picture on my computer. there are also numbers in front of the camera ie (950, 2400, etc) what does that number mean? I just need a clear, great quality, outdoor, wireless prefered (doesn't have to be), cameras that works well at night, sees far, gets great picture and recordes lots. I need a system of about 4-6 cameras but I am willing to buy camera's seperate if I need better quality than most would want. I need to catch some bad guys. Does anyone have any suggestions what cameras I should get?

These cameras are not measured in megapixels, they are measured in line of resolution. You will need at least 500 lines of resolution, and probably more. You will also need the least amount of compression possible, which means large storage capacity for the video. recording faces and license plates at night is not as easy as it sounds. Your IR light source acts as a flashlight, so you get glare on faces and glasses. License plates reflect that light right back at the camera, blowing out the numbers. Colors shift, what looks like a light gray jacket on your recording may actually be black, or even brown. Camera placement is important too. Hey Everyone, had my car broken into for the second time in 6 months at my apartment complex. I have recently invested in a few gadgets to catch this suckers. I just bought a Linksys Wireless N Router, Linksys Wireless G Security Cam (Indoor) and a WD 640gb harddrive to record video to. I have recently hit a brick wall on my project, I cant seem to quite extend my signal out to where my car is at my apartment complex, I am located on the far side of the building in relation to my car, going through 3 floors down and about 5-6 walls. Obviously the cam that I have is not made for outdoor, however I made a little silicon/plexiglass box for it, and its under the overhang (or thats where i want it to be) however I just cant seem to get it to connect that far away, Wireless N Router didnt seem to boost the signal at all, in fact seemed to weaken it from my old G that I had. Before you say that you have to have an "N" camera I know, but I have also read that you can still get a boost with just the router. **The Question** Does anyone know a way to either boost my signal, or more realistically a new long range camera, for under 200.00 that probably will do a little better than this 99.00 linksys cam i bought? Thanks for your help in advance. I have the WRT160N right now. That range expander you showed me only shows capatability with G and B. Also I really dont think that will help nor do I want to spend much MORE money =-/

I am trying to find a IP Camera Kit, atleast 4 Cameras so i can install it onto a premise I have. the reason i chose a IP Camera kit is that it can be veiws over logn distances, eg, over a DVR server. It is best DECENTRAIZED so i can record it onto a SD card, Flash Drive, so on. I also want It to have a good range, can be recorded in LOW LGIHT coniditions, night Vision best enabled. If you can, please can you see if heres a Infared enabled too. And it has to be wireless, small and discret. Can you please also offer me a DVR server solution, where to buy a DVR server? And best if the Cameras will start recording if a motion triggers it, a motiond ector will trigger the camera to start recording, but that is optional. There are some systems out there that can do the job. Sometimes the wireless ones are not as reliable. If you have to go wireless you can, but they won't be as good as the wired unless you pay more money. This is a general guide for buying a DVR system: When you talk about seeing the video over long distances, there are some cheap options for that on your cell phone. There is a product called Mobiscope that I recommend. It is about $10. On the motion triggering of the images, they have that too. They do it by comparing the pixels in the image to see if they have changed with the image a moment before, thus detecting motion. There are some free software packages for that but if you buy a DVR system, it will more than likely come with the software to handle that. I think on Amazon, there is a system called the Defender. It comes with multiple cameras and is around $600. I would buy from Amazon simply because you can read the reviews and they have a great return policy. It would be nice to see the cameras in use though first before deciding.

You are looking for really specific equipment. Unfortunately, I don't think this is the place to find the info you want. I guess that there are military and/or security forums where people will be really well versed in that stuff. Another thing to keep in mind is that if you are looking to set up a serious and expensive system, the companies you talk to will want to demo the cameras for you. This means that you can play one off against the other in terms of price, service contracts, etc., while you can compare them directly for their ability to perform to suit your needs. hth.
